Argentina weather

Because of the great extension from north to south of Argentina, and the different elevations of the various regions of the country, Argentina has several types of climate. Most of the country has temperate climate, while the far north has tropical climate and the extreme southern sub-polar.

North
The north of Argentina has a warm and humid sub-tropical climate, with rain throughout the year. The best season for visiting are the winter months, relatively dry and less hot between June and September.

At Iguazu, the average annual rainfall reaches 1800 mm. In the area of Chaco annual average temperatures are 23°C and the average annual rainfall is 760 mm. The rain falls in moving from east to west. In the north-west area near the Andes, along the border with Chile annual average temperatures are around 14°C and average annual rainfall only 50 mm.

Central area
The central area of the country has a temperate climate, but it can be hot and humid in summer and cold in winter. In Pampa, the average annual rainfall varies between 1,000 mm to the east, and 500 mm in the west towards the Andes, where it has a temperate continental climate, with very hot summers and mild winters. Summers are warm, with average maximum temperatures of 29°C-28°C and average minimum temperatures of 16°C-17°C in January, with absolute maximum sometimes high, the winters are relatively mild with maximum temperatures of 17°C – 20°C and average minimum of 7°C – 4°C in July. This area is best visited in the intermediate seasons, spring and autumn.

Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires has a temperate climate with average maximum temperatures ranging between 30°C in January and 14°C in July, the average minimum instead vary between 20°C in January and 7°C in July. The rains are more frequent in winter, autumn and spring, but it can rain all year. The average annual rainfall in Buenos Aires is 1200 mm.

South – Patagonia
The south of the country has a sub-Arctic climate, characterized by strong winds and not too abundant rainfall ranging between 800 mm and 200 mm annually. In Northern Patagonia climate is moderate in autumn and spring but with frequent windy days. In full summer (January and February) temperatures can exceed 30°C but since the weather is very variable may be also cold days. In Glaciers National Park the temperature varies between 12°C and 20°C and can go up to 28°C in summer. At the extreme south, however, the maximum average temperatures range from 15°C to 4°C while the average minimum varies from -1°C to 5°C: the climate is very variable within the same day. The best time to visit this region of Argentina in the summer between December and February.
