2002
The 10th edition of the biggest
rally of South America started in Goiania the 24th of July, and
finished the 2nd of august, 4.400km up north, in
Fortaleza.
This website and the pictures have been made by Mark Bangert and Rolf
Poll, who were part of the Apoio 2002, the support group.

Sertões
Configured technically as a rally-type race,
the event is organized by Dunas Race Eventos and Promoções, a São
Paulo-based firm. The event takes place exclusively within Brazilian
territory and covers an average of 5.000km. It has as its main objective
the development and professionalizing of off-road motorcycle and car
racing, creating a rally culture among professional and amateur drivers,
forming technical competition and support teams, stimulating investment by
sponsors, and awakening international interest in the practice of this
sport in Brazil. It should be mentioned that owing to its geographical,
social, and political characteristics, this country offers highly
favourable conditions for the future development and growth of this type
of activity in a peaceful land that has limitless potential for tourism.
Participating directly in Rally dos Sertões are CBM (Brazilian
Motorcycling Confederation), FIM and CNR/CBA (National Rally Commission),
responsible for technical inspection of the regulations, checking of
equipment, and other verifications. The basic scoring elements are
navigation, regularity, and speed. The race has average daily stretches of
five hundred kilometers, within which are special test stretches of one
hundred and twenty kilometers.
